Victorian Premier Steve Bracks praises the governorship of Sir James Gobbo whose term
as governor of Victoria ends on December 31.

Outcue: ...term of office. Length: 14 sec

Governor (Melbourne)

Victorian Premier STEVE BRACKS has defended his decision NOT to extend Sir JAMES GOBBO's
term as the state's governor.

Olympian JOHN LANDY was this morning appointed the new governor and will take up the
position from January 2001.

Mr BRACKS says Sir JAMES' letter of appointment in April 1997 explicitly stated his
term would continue until December 31, 2000, and that any extension was a matter for the
Premier at the time.

He says he's not aware of a reported understanding between Sir JAMES and former premier
JEFF KENNETT that his term of office would be extended by 15 months.

Mr BRACKS says Sir JAMES has served with distinction but he feels the position deserves
a new person -- someone of equal distinction but in a different area.

He says the office of governor should reflect the wide range of views of the Victorian public.

Mr BRACKS has told reporters Mr LANDY has a deep and abiding passion for country and
regional Victoria and, with his wife LYNNE, will serve the office with distinction.
